Mitch Evans Outshines Rivals: E-Formula Driver Ratings for the Season Opener in Sao Paulo
By Tim Neuhaus, December 10, 2024, 7:45 PM
Over the weekend, Formula E kicked off its eleventh season with a thrilling race. Wehrlein experienced a rollover, only 14 drivers managed to finish, the Attack Mode proved to be more powerful than ever, McLaren secured a podium finish despite a drive-through penalty, and Mitch Evans claimed victory starting from the last position on the grid. Amidst the chaos, assigning ratings wasn’t easy, but the editorial team eventually reached a consensus.
Following each race in the 2024/25 Formula E season, our editors assign scores to all the drivers, using a scale from 1 to 10. These scores are then ranked based on the drivers‘ average ratings. Only the drivers‘ performances are considered in these evaluations, excluding the car’s potential or any external factors.
Mitch Evans | Jaguar TCS Racing | 9.8
Mitch Evans has made history in Formula E by becoming the first driver to secure a victory starting from the very last position on the grid. His performance was not only remarkable, but he also faced technical difficulties throughout the weekend. These issues forced the New Zealander to retire his car during the second free practice session and the qualifying. Despite having minimal time on the track, his ability to clinch the win truly deserves high praise!
Antonio Felix Da Costa | TAG Heuer Porsche | 9.0
Antonio Felix da Costa began this season far better than he did in Season 10. With a strong performance in qualifying and consistently staying at the front during the race, his performance was solid. Notably, he managed to secure second place without losing momentum at any point during the event. His ability to remain calm and accurately assess the race situation is the Portuguese driver’s greatest strength.
Oliver Rowland | Nissan | 8.8
Oliver Rowland could be considered the unluckiest competitor of the race weekend. He was in control for most of the race at the Sambadrome and appeared to be the frontrunner for victory. However, an issue with the control systems during the start procedure of his Nissan led to a late drive-through penalty, costing him all his chances. Much like Felix da Costa, Rowland seems to have carried his top form from last season into Season 11.
Nick Cassidy, driving for Jaguar TCS Racing, received a score of 5.3 in the E-Prix. Although some drivers scored lower, they either failed to finish the race or were newcomers to the series. Cassidy, the second driver for Jaguar, faced significant challenges over the weekend. He appeared frustrated and lacked confidence in handling the car. He did not manage to progress to the duel phase of qualifying, but the race dynamics initially seemed to favor him. Despite holding a temporary lead, he failed to capitalize on it, eventually colliding with Günther and subsequently with Wehrlein during a desperate attempt to defend his position. Being 25 points behind his teammate after just one race is certainly not where he aims to be.
I’m
Key factor when scores are tied: higher individual rating in the driver standings. When points are equal: superior race result.
