Mitch Evans’ Spectacular Comeback: From Last to Record-Setting Victory at Sao Paulo E-Prix

„Not exactly comfortable, but it worked“ – Mitch Evans charges from the last starting position to claim a Formula E record victory

Mitch Evans emerged as the unexpected winner of the Sao Paulo E-Prix. Starting from the 22nd and final position on the grid, the Jaguar driver managed to clinch victory. With this win, he matched the record of 13 Formula E victories, a feat previously achieved by Lucas di Grassi and Sebastien Buemi in the electric racing series. After the race, Evans himself expressed surprise at the outcome.

Evans summarized the event shortly after it ended by saying, „What a thrilling race that was.“ Reflecting on the moments before the start, he admitted, „When I was on the starting grid, my initial hope was just to make it to the finish line. I had faced several issues on the track over the past two days, which prevented me from participating in the qualifying session. I even had to cut short one of the two practice sessions.“

„When the race started, I just had to put it out of my mind,“ he explains. „In the first two laps, I managed to pass ten cars. This significantly altered the course of my race, as I was suddenly in the thick of the action. Following that, I decided to shift my attention and work on further improving my performance in the race.“

When the initial group of drivers switched to Attack Mode, Evans had to rethink his strategy once more. „It was an eye-opener for me to see how much ground people (using all-wheel drive) gained,“ he remarked, specifically referencing his teammate Nick Cassidy. At the time, Cassidy was positioned just ahead of Evans in the middle of the pack. However, after activating his first Attack Mode, he managed to advance to first place in just one and a half laps.

„This outcome is so surprising“

Evans gained an advantage in his comeback through two race interruptions, even though they had very different effects. The standing restart after the first red flag required Evans to expend a significant amount of energy. Fortunately for him, after the second interruption, the race officials decided against conducting another standing restart.

„The warning signs varied significantly for me,“ he explains. „After the first one, my energy levels dropped significantly. Following the second, during the final few laps, the energy target was just high enough to keep me going—certainly not comfortable, but manageable. I was able to meet my goals and succeeded.“

„Scoring 25 points is definitely a huge surprise,“ Evans states. „This outcome is so unexpected, especially considering what happened during the qualifying,“ he admits. „But I’ll gladly take it. This is a great track for me, and it’s already my second victory here. I’m quite happy.“

Evans will head to the next race in Mexico City as the leader of the World Championship. His main rivals from last season’s championship battle, Pascal Wehrlein, Nick Cassidy, and Oliver Rowland, all failed to score any points in Sao Paulo.
