Günther disappointed after setback in DS debut: „The result doesn’t reflect our performance at all.“
Reported by Tobias Wirtz on December 11, 2024, at 11:26 AM.
Max Günther nearly reached the points standings upon his return to Jay Penske’s Formula E team, finishing in eleventh place. The German driver was just 0.314 seconds behind Stoffel Vandoorne, who was driving for Maserati and secured the tenth position, earning the last available championship point. Despite this, Günther expressed great satisfaction with both his performance and that of his team.
During the qualifying rounds in Brazil, it became evident that the DS-Penske driver would be a strong contender. Günther secured third place in his group, advancing to the duel stage. In the quarterfinals, equipped with all-wheel drive and 350 kW of power, he decisively defeated Edoardo Mortara, who had been quicker in the group stage with rear-wheel drive and 300 kW. Günther’s journey ended in the semifinals, where he was bested by Pascal Wehrlein.
During the race, the German driver, starting from fourth position, remained with the leading group for a significant period and managed his energy efficiently. However, his fortunes changed when he found himself in the wrong place at the wrong time. Günther attempted an outside maneuver to overtake Nick Cassidy for third place, while at the same moment, Wehrlein made a move on the inside. This resulted in all three cars making contact, causing Günther to crash into the wall.
During the subsequent race pause, the DS Penske team replaced the front wing, allowing Günther to at least finish the race. Starting from 14th position, there wasn’t much more he could achieve, and he crossed the finish line in 12th place. However, due to a penalty given to Norman Nato after the race, Günther moved up one spot.
„99 Percent Was Really Good“
Max Günther expressed his disappointment following the race, stating, „This result doesn’t at all reflect our performance today or over the weekend.“ He added, „To be honest, I’m very pleased with how the race went, even though we didn’t score any points. We demonstrated excellent quality and performance here. I secured a spot in the second row during qualifying and drove a very strong race. 99 percent of what we did was really good. As a team, we made great decisions, executed smart moves, managed energy well, and found ourselves in a good position with four or five laps remaining.“
He continued by describing the incident in Turn 5 involving Pascal and Nick, which unfortunately knocked them out of the race. „There was nothing I could do about it,“ he explained. „That’s Formula E for you—it’s unpredictable. You always try to steer clear of these situations as much as possible, but it’s not always feasible. Today was just one of those days. Nevertheless, I’m really looking forward to the upcoming races.“
The season will resume in the new year with the Mexico City E-Prix, marking the second race of the 2024/25 Formula E World Championship, scheduled for January 11th.
