GM executive supports removing Apple CarPlay from electric vehicles
General Motors remains dedicated to eliminating Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration in upcoming electric vehicles, according to software chief Baris Cetinok, who spoke recently with The Verge.
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which enable users to mirror their smartphone functionalities on vehicle screens, and also include additional features for electric vehicles like route planning, have gained favor among consumers. However, GM disclosed last year that it would discontinue integrating these systems into its future electric vehicles, opting instead for a new infotainment system powered by Google.

According to Cetinok, speaking to The Verge, this approach remains the optimal choice as it enables GM to develop a fully integrated experience directly within the vehicle itself, as opposed to adopting interfaces that originate from smartphone applications.
„Cetinok, who has experience in product management and marketing at Apple for services like Apple Pay and iCloud, emphasized, ‚We are more than just a monitor company; we don’t merely ship devices with monitors.‘ He argued that moving away from extensive smartphone integration will facilitate a more integrated experience, incorporating elements such as GM’s Super Cruise driver assistance and podcast applications for entertainment.“

The 2024 Chevrolet Blazer EV marked General Motors‘ first release without the inclusion of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a trend that continued with subsequent electric vehicles such as the Chevy Equinox EV and Chevy Silverado EV. This change might be particularly challenging for users who are accustomed to Apple’s services like Apple Maps. The new GM electric vehicles feature a Google-based infotainment system, which includes similar functionalities to Android Auto, including Google Maps and voice recognition through Google Assistant. However, it’s important to highlight that these services require an independent vehicle data plan, which will incur additional costs for owners down the line and also generate more revenue for GM.
Seamless incorporation of software capabilities is crucial for mapping out routes, since information like the vehicle’s battery level and additional data is essential for scheduling charging breaks and preparing battery packs for fast charging. However, as shown by various car manufacturers, this does not necessitate removing features. For example, Ford electric vehicles provide options, allowing for these functions through both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, in addition to their proprietary navigation systems.
