Pit boost and cost cap: Motorsport Council approves changes to Formula E regulations

By Tobias Wirtz, December 12, 2024, 10:45 AM

At a meeting held in Kigali, Rwanda, the FIA World Motor Sport Council (WMSC) approved modifications to the rulebook of the Formula E World Championship. The changes, which pertain to the rapid charging pit stops and the cost cap for teams, have been implemented immediately.

The initial modification relates to the sporting regulations of the racing series: The Attack-Charge has now been officially renamed to Pit-Boost in the rulebook. In addition, during races that include Pit-Boost pit stops, drivers are no longer required to activate the Attack Mode only after fast charging. Instead, they are permitted to activate it starting from lap 2. This change is expected to provide drivers with more strategic options throughout the race.

The second adjustment pertains to the cost cap for Formula E teams. A team is allowed to deduct €100,000 from their annual expenses if the monocoque of their vehicle is severely damaged during a race weekend accident, necessitating a replacement as determined by the FIA. Teams can deduct up to €200,000 per reporting period. The aim is to prevent teams from exceeding the cost cap due to accidents, which might not be their fault, especially if they were already operating on a tight budget.
