Numbers, Data, Facts: The Top Statistics from the 2024/25 Formula E Season Opener in Brazil
Reported by Tobias Wirtz on December 9, 2024, at 2:00 PM
Formula E kicked off its 2024/25 season with a race in Sao Paulo on Saturday. This inaugural race weekend featuring the Gen3-Evo cars produced a range of intriguing statistics, milestones, and peculiarities.
Unique Statistics at the Sao Paulo E-Prix
Position Changes (Sao Paulo E-Prix)
Mitch Evans stood out in Sao Paulo by gaining a total of 20 positions, making him the driver who advanced the most. Starting from 22nd place and going on to win the race is an impressive feat. As Robin Frijns did not participate in the E-Prix, there were only 21 competitors.
In this ranking, following Evans, are Nyck de Vries with 14 positions gained and Taylor Barnard with 13. At the bottom of the list are Jake Dennis and Pascal Wehrlein, both of whom started near the front but did not finish the race. Dennis was sidelined by a technical issue, while Wehrlein was involved in a crash with Nick Cassidy.

var newHeight = event.data[„datawrapper-height“][key] + „px“;

Completed Laps (Season)
In Brazil, 14 drivers managed to finish all 35 laps of the race. The drivers who did not complete the race were David Beckmann, Nick Cassidy, Jake Dennis, Lucas di Grassi, Jake Hughes, Nico Müller, and Pascal Wehrlein. Robin Frijns did not participate in the race at all.

In a strict mode function, the window listens for message events. When a message is received, it checks if the data contains „datawrapper-height“. If it does, the script selects all „iframe“ elements on the page. It then iterates over the data associated with „datawrapper-height“ and all iframes. If an iframe’s content window matches the source of the message, the script updates that iframe’s height to the specified value in pixels from the message data.
Leaders in Laps (Season)
In Brazil, Oliver Rowland dominated by leading nearly half of the race. The remaining laps in the lead were shared by drivers from the Jaguar and Porsche teams.
Performance Review of Drivers & Teams (Sao Paulo E-Prix)
Jake Dennis emerges as the standout performer in our analysis of the Sao Paulo E-Prix. During the second practice session, the Andretti driver clocked the fastest lap of the weekend, posting a time of 1:09.617 minutes. Close behind him was Antonio Felix da Costa, trailing by just 0.038 seconds, followed by Oliver Rowland and Pascal Wehrlein. Remarkably, 19 drivers in Brazil were separated by less than a second. At the back of the pack were Jake Hughes, with a time of 1:10.852, and the Lola-Yamaha-ABT pair of Lucas di Grassi (1:10.923) and Zane Maloney (1:11.053), who were nearly 1.5 seconds off the best time.
The team that completed a lap the fastest was Andretti, just ahead of Nissan and Porsche. Behind them were Jaguar, Envision, and DS Penske. The slowest team in Sao Paulo was Lola-Yamaha ABT. In terms of the manufacturer rankings, this translates to: Porsche leading, followed by Nissan, Jaguar, DS/Maserati, Mahindra, and finally Lola Yamaha.

Lap Time Analysis (Sao Paulo E-Prix)
In the analysis of lap times (we are only focusing on laps after the safety car period and before the first race suspension due to possible distortions), it is noticeable how much the drivers benefited from the new all-wheel drive attack mode.
Just after the safety car period concluded, Nick Cassidy engaged his first Attack Mode, demonstrating for the first time the performance boosts possible this season with the increased power, as he gained eight positions in just one lap. In the 16th lap, the Porsche drivers activated their Attack Mode and surged to the front of the pack. Meanwhile, Zane Maloney also made impressive progress in Attack Mode, advancing from 17th to 7th place.
The McLaren drivers‘ strategy was notably unusual: After receiving early drive-through penalties, they conserved energy by driving about five seconds slower per lap compared to the front-runners, which even led to both being lapped. However, this approach proved beneficial. Due to a race interruption, Barnard and Bird were able to regain their laps and gained a significant energy advantage over their competitors, ultimately securing the third and fourth positions.
„Use strict mode“; window.addEventListener(„message“, function(event) if (event.data[„datawrapper-height“] !== undefined) var iframes = document.querySelectorAll(„iframe“); for (var id in event.data[„datawrapper-height“]) for (var i = 0; i < iframes.length; i++) if (iframes[i].contentWindow === event.source) var newHeight = event.data["datawrapper-height"][id] + "px"; iframes[i].style.height = newHeight; );}();
