Review: The 2024 Porsche Macan Turbo Electric Makes a Strong Impression
When it comes to sporty electric cars, one of the biggest challenges is managing weight. Porsche tackled this issue quite successfully with the Taycan models, both the hatchback and the wagon, delivering vehicles that offer precise handling and an exciting driving experience. Now, Porsche is transforming the compact Macan into the Macan Electric, aiming to replicate that success.
I took the 2024 Macan Turbo Electric for a spin, a car that has been shortlisted as a finalist for Green Car Reports’ Best Car To Buy in 2024. Porsche’s decision to convert its best-selling model to a fully electric vehicle brings both advantages and drawbacks in terms of performance, although it significantly boosts energy efficiency.
Porsche has largely achieved its goal in creating a dynamic and exciting car, despite it being just under 5,400 pounds.

Macan Electric Launches on New Architecture
Ten years back, Porsche engineers undertook alterations on the VW Group’s MLB platform to ensure the gasoline-powered Macan delivered the distinctive driving experience associated with Porsche, differentiating it from the comparable Audi Q5. Now, they have been integral from the outset in developing the innovative Premium Platform Electric (PPE) architecture for the latest Macan Electric.
The platform required minimal modifications to adopt the distinct Porsche traits. A Porsche representative noted that the primary alteration compared to other PPE models, such as the 2025 Audi Q6 E-Tron, involved rotating the rear motor by 180 degrees. This adjustment was made to enhance weight distribution and create room for the optional rear-wheel steering mechanism, which fits between the motor and the battery. This change achieves an almost ideal weight distribution ratio of 48:52 from front to rear.
The Macan Electric utilizes an electric platform similar to a skateboard, known as PPE, which accommodates an 800-volt, 100-kWh battery, offering 95 kWh of usable energy. It features two permanent-magnet motors placed on each axle, collectively generating 576 horsepower and 811 lb-ft of torque. This output can temporarily increase to 630 horsepower and 833 lb-ft of torque with a 10-second burst of overboost. According to Porsche, these electric motors enable the all-wheel-drive system to respond five times faster than before, with power distribution varying depending on the selected driving mode.

Macan Turbo Electric: Delivering a Distinct Porsche Experience in an EV
The Macan Electric doesn’t require extensive modifications to its platform to achieve a driving experience unique to Porsche. Instead, it benefits from Porsche-specific suspension adjustments and high-performance features, particularly noticeable in the premium Turbo variant. Each Macan Electric is equipped with an air suspension system on all four corners, adaptive dampers, and a responsive steering ratio of 14.2:1. The Turbo model further enhances its performance with an electronically controlled locking rear differential, and it boasts larger brakes with 14.8-inch front rotors featuring six-piston calipers (compared to the base model’s smaller size and fewer calipers) and 13.8-inch rear rotors with single-piston floating calipers.
The Turbo tester I received was equipped with the optional rear-wheel steering system and a set of Pirelli P Zero Corsa summer performance tires, sized 255/40R22 for the front and 295/35R22 for the rear, instead of the typical 20-inch all-season tires. The rear-wheel steering system can pivot the rear wheels up to 5 degrees in the opposite direction of the front wheels at low speeds, and in the same direction as the front wheels at higher speeds, enhancing stability.
During my trip, I spent time driving on the track at Atlanta Motorsports Park and navigating the winding roads of northern Georgia. The Macan Electric handled both scenarios impressively, though not without some differences. It maintained the familiar Porsche sensation but with a unique twist. The steering was sharp and precise, as one would expect from a Porsche, and the small steering wheel felt perfectly suited. While there was some feedback, it lacked the intuitive connection found in gas-powered Porsches, due in part to the hefty battery pack separating the driver from the road. The suspension was consistently firm yet remained comfortable, staying true to Porsche’s standards.
The battery significantly influenced the vehicle’s handling, offering both positive and negative aspects. On the racetrack, the low center of gravity, combined with the air springs and adaptive dampers, allowed this small crossover to make sharp turns. However, there was a noticeable sensation of a rapid weight transfer beneath me with each corner entry. After that initial shift, the suspension settled, leaning in a controlled way—impressive given the 6.7 inches of ground clearance in Sport+ mode, reduced from the usual 7.2 inches—and maintained precise lines through even the most challenging curves.
The brakes provided a smooth and gradual response, performing admirably during track use, which is notable considering they had to stop an SUV weighing 5,393 pounds. However, the tires did not fare as well. After roughly 25 laps on the 2.0-mile course at Atlanta Motorsports Park, the tires began to wear down, with large pieces of rubber detaching from their edges. This issue could be attributed to the vehicle’s substantial weight, the tires themselves, or a combination of both factors. It’s probably the latter, as the same tire model exhibited similar problems on the Hyundai Ioniq 5N.
I was pleasantly surprised that time spent on the track didn’t significantly deplete the battery or lead to overheating of the motors or battery. During each session of four laps, the battery lost around 9% of its charge, allowing us to continue driving the Macan Turbo Electric for half a day without needing to recharge for additional track runs.

Charging and Range for the Porsche Macan Electric
The Macan Electric’s battery system can function as a single 800-volt unit or be split into two 400-volt packs. When connected to a 350-kw fast charger on the driver’s side, the vehicle can charge at speeds reaching up to 270 kw. This allows the car to gain 155 miles of range in just 10 minutes or increase its charge from 10% to 80% in 21 minutes. If using a 400-volt charger, the system treats the battery as two separate units, providing 75 miles of range in 10 minutes and taking 33 minutes to charge from 10% to 80%. Meanwhile, the charge port on the passenger side is designed for a Level 2 (AC) home charger, which requires 10 hours to fully charge the battery from 0% to 100%.
Despite its impressive power, the Macan Turbo Electric offers a solid driving range. It can travel up to 288 miles on a single charge, just like the 502-horsepower 4S variant. The 402-horsepower 4 version boasts a range of 308 miles, while the 335-horsepower entry-level model achieves a maximum range of 315 miles, with an energy efficiency of 2.9 miles per kilowatt-hour.

Macan Turbo Electric: Abundant Power
The GTS is the leading gas-powered model in the Macan lineup. It features a 2.9-liter V-6 engine with twin turbochargers, delivering 434 horsepower and 405 lb-ft of torque, enabling it to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 4.1 seconds. In contrast, the Macan Turbo Electric, despite being 1,000 pounds heavier, boasts 630 horsepower, achieving a 0 to 60 mph sprint in just 3.1 seconds with the standard launch control system. However, accessing this power doesn’t require launch control; it’s instantly available, providing a smooth and balanced performance on the track. This power delivery maintains stability during corner exits and through long turns, even with slight throttle adjustments. The overboost feature ensures maximum power on every straightaway as it resets whenever the accelerator is released, such as before entering a bend.
When driving, this vehicle boasts an impressive amount of power, providing an exhilarating experience when you accelerate quickly on a straight path. However, it is equally comfortable at slower, city speeds, responding well to gentle pressure on the accelerator without feeling like a racing dog eager to sprint.
The compromise in this situation is reasonable. Unlike the GTS’s twin-turbo V-6, which produces a growling noise, or the deep roar of a Porsche flat-6, the Macan Electric’s motors are silent by default. However, for a price of $490, Porsche offers a Porsche Electric Sport Sound option that generates a futuristic hum, typical of some electric vehicles. This sound adjusts its pitch with increased throttle but doesn’t quite match the quality of a traditional engine noise.

The Macan Electric outshines its gasoline counterpart in terms of cabin design. It boasts a 2.3-inch increase in length and a 2.4-inch longer wheelbase compared to the gas version. This expansion provides more room for rear-seat passengers, although taller individuals may still find it a bit tight. Porsche refers to the seating arrangement as 4+1, acknowledging that it’s not ideal for five adults. The sleek design of the rear roofline slightly reduces interior space, with the Macan Electric offering 16.5 cubic feet of storage behind the back seats and 46.5 cubic feet when they are folded, which is less than the gas version’s 17.7 and 53.8 cubic feet. However, an additional 2.9-cubic-foot front trunk helps recover some of that lost space.
The Macan Electric closely resembles the latest Porsche models, marking an improvement over the older gasoline variant. A tiny, textured lever on the dashboard acts as the gear shifter, similar to the setups in the latest Cayenne and Panamera, while the dashboard boasts the layered horizontal design seen in the 911. The compact steering wheel complements its sporty vibe, and the Sport Chrono clock timer is prominently placed at the center of the dashboard. Porsche minimizes the number of buttons, and the independent haptic touch controls for the climate system give off a less premium feel.
The Macan Electric comes equipped with a 12.6-inch digital display for instruments and a 10.9-inch touchscreen for infotainment. The dials lack a covering, which gives the dashboard a peculiar appearance when viewed from the passenger’s side, though there was no noticeable glare from the sun on the screen. Available features include a head-up display that incorporates augmented reality overlays, along with an additional 10.9-inch touchscreen for the front passenger. This screen allows the passenger to manage navigation, phone, and music functions, along with connected home devices, streaming services, and other applications.
The infotainment display houses the Sport Chrono timers, the My Porsche application, and a cloud-based charging planner, which Porsche claims operates more swiftly than a standard version.
