How AI is changing the media industry
A new survey of more than 2,000 journalists and editors, released this week, finds that the majority of journalists in the U.S. are optimistic about the future of automated news and automatic political predictions. The survey, conducted by the nonprofit Journalists’ Freedom Project, shows that a large majority of journalists (82%) are optimistic about the future of automated news and automatic political predictions, while 36% are pessimistic.
The report also found that journalists see the most promise in the ability of AI to improve news coverage, with 25% believing that AI will make news better and 17% believing that AI will make news worse. “News organizations are increasingly turning to automated AI tools to provide them with more timely, relevant and accurate information,” said newspaper industry analyst Chris Van Patten. “AI can play an important role as a new tool to help journalists do their jobs better and faster.”
The survey also found that the future of news coverage is largely dominated by technology and innovation. Just over half (53%) of respondents said that the future of news coverage is dominated by technology and innovation, while 20% said that the future of news coverage is dominated by politics, and 17% said that the future of news coverage is dominated by politics and technology.
