„Considering the circumstances, he is doing well“ – Wehrlein to undergo additional tests in the hospital
By Timo Pape, December 7, 2024, at 8:30 PM
During the Formula E season opener in São Paulo, a dramatic incident unfolded five laps before the finish. In turn 6, Nick Cassidy, driving for Jaguar, collided with Pascal Wehrlein, causing the German driver’s Porsche to lift off the ground. The car crashed violently against the safety fence, landing upside down. Wehrlein was immediately examined at the track following the crash, and it appears that the world champion did not sustain any serious injuries.
Porsche’s team leader, Florian Modlinger, informed ServusTV shortly after the race concluded that „given the circumstances, he is doing well.“ Modlinger stated that initially, the individual was taken to the medical center, where all the assessments were satisfactory. „We are now sending him to the hospital for a comprehensive examination to ensure everything is thoroughly checked,“ he added. „But the most important message is that he is okay.“

Shortly after the crash, Wehrlein reassured his team over the radio that he was unharmed. However, he had to remain suspended upside down in the car for several minutes until a crane finally set the Porsche upright on the track. With the assistance of safety personnel, the 30-year-old climbed out of the vehicle and was immediately taken to the medical center.
Teammate Antonio Felix da Costa, who finished the race in second place, expressed his relief shortly after the E-Prix, saying, „I’m really glad Pascal is alright.“ He added that he hadn’t had the chance to speak with him yet. Da Costa remarked that the incident serves as a reminder of the inherent dangers in their sport, highlighting the importance of respecting one another on the track. During the press conference, Taylor Barnard also commented on the event, stating, „I saw it happen right next to me—it was a truly frightening crash!“

Cassidy described feeling quite uneasy after a series of events leading to Wehrlein’s accident, which he had inadvertently helped start. As they approached Turn 5, Cassidy attempted to squeeze through on the inside next to Cassidy, who was already side by side with Max Günther. Cassidy had no choice but to push Günther towards the wall, which resulted in damage to his own front suspension. In the subsequent right-hand Turn 6, Wehrlein was positioned on Cassidy’s left, but Cassidy was unable to steer properly.
As the bend tightened, Wehrlein’s Porsche made contact with Cassidy’s left front wheel and lifted off the ground. The car soared into the safety fence with its top side, landed upside down, and continued skidding for several meters, sending sparks flying.

Cassidy watched the unfolding scene from the cockpit as he initially moved forward. After the race, he explained the situation to Motorsport.com: „I don’t really feel like I caused anyone to crash. Two cars suddenly appeared from behind and boxed me in. I’m not sure what I could have done differently. It’s quite unsettling to see a car upside down. I’m just really relieved that he’s okay.“
The incident with Wehrlein was caused by a broken front-right suspension on the Jaguar. „I’m not sure what was bent or damaged, but we had to do a lot of repairs to get back on track,“ Cassidy commented. He eventually did get back on track, but soon after, he had to retire for good. „Once I was out there, other issues arose. In the final laps, there was something off with our software. We experienced some kind of energy problem,“ Cassidy explained.
Despite high hopes for victory, the „Kiwi“ came away empty-handed. However, teammate Mitch Evans managed to save the day for Jaguar by securing a win in the opening event.
