Bridgestone Innovates with 55% Sustainable Materials in New Tires for Audi E-Tron GT

Bridgestone has introduced a new tire composed of 55% recycled and renewable resources, specifically designed for the Audi E-Tron GT, Audi’s premier electric performance vehicle.

The specific tire discussed is a version of the Bridgestone Potenza Sport designed for summer driving, this time customized for the E-Tron GT, as per Bridgestone. The firm highlighted that it has earned an International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) due to the tire’s use of recycled and renewable materials.

According to Bridgestone, the composition includes 35% renewable substances such as natural rubber and bio-based polymers, and 20% recycled components including pulverized rubber and carbon black sourced from old tires, alongside rice husk-derived silica. Additionally, the tire is produced in a Rome-based facility that operates on renewable energy, the company notes.

Bridgestone is targeting carbon neutrality and plans to incorporate only sustainable materials in its tires by the year 2050. Previously, the company produced limited amounts of IndyCar racing tires using natural rubber derived from guayule, a plant found in the American southwest. This initiative represents the company’s first step towards implementing its sustainability goals in the mass production of tires for everyday vehicles.

Electric vehicles (EVs) do not produce „tailpipe“ emissions; however, the production of tires and additional parts contributes significantly to their overall carbon emissions. This has prompted companies like Michelin and Hyundai to explore methods to create more sustainable tires for EVs.

In 2022, Goodyear introduced a concept tire composed of 70% sustainable materials, though it was not yet released for sale. The next year, they announced more environmentally friendly tires designed for the Tesla Model 3, incorporating carbon black produced without burning fossil fuels.
