2024 Ford Mustang Mach-E GT: Electrifying Performance and Iconic Design Unleashed

Review: The 2024 Ford Mustang Mach-E GT Embraces Electric Power

Ford’s Mach-E stands alone as the company’s sole electric model, with no gas-powered counterpart. Despite its unique power source, its design and performance make it unmistakably part of the Mustang lineage.

In the 2024 Ford Mustang Mach-E GT, the design elements and horse emblems continue to deliver a bold sense of pony-car style. I switch the vehicle to its performance mode, known as Unbridle, which amplifies this effect, and a synthetic engine sound interrupts our discussion like a sudden record scratch.

I turn to my driving companion and ask, „Do you enjoy horses?“

The Mustang Mach-E stands out as a unique electric vehicle. While the Mustang name gives it some notoriety, its standout features have always differed significantly from the traditional Mustang series.

Apart from the Chevy Blazer EV and Equinox EV, all other competitors significantly differ from their internal combustion engine counterparts.

2024 Ford Mustang Mach-E GT

The Mach-E stands out as an early and influential model in the popular electric vehicle (EV) sector, specifically among compact crossover SUVs. It features sleek roof designs, smooth curves, and advanced technology. When the Mach-E began shipping in late 2020, it was only competing with the Tesla Model Y, as the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, and Nissan Ariya were not yet available.

Although the Mach-E GT is not designed specifically for track performance like the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N, a range of engineering enhancements and clever adjustments have made this model an improved electric vehicle for winding roads, as recently observed by Green Car Reports. In contrast, the 2024 Ford Mustang Mach-E Rally, which is tailored for exhilarating dirt-track driving, is the real star for closed-circuit excitement. A first drive review of this model will soon be available on our partner site, Motor Authority.

The 2024 Mach-E GT stands out for its impressive range among performance-focused crossovers. According to official EPA ratings, it significantly outperforms the Tesla Model Y Performance. Additionally, it offers a much greater range compared to the Kia EV6 GT and Hyundai Ioniq 5 N, which are rated at 206 miles and 221 miles, respectively.

The focus isn’t solely on efficiency; the Mach-E GT boasts a battery that surpasses those of its competitors in size. It features a 91-kilowatt-hour (usable) Extended Range battery pack, providing an EPA-rated range of 280 miles. Additionally, the Mach-E Select and Premium models offer a 72-kilowatt-hour Standard Range battery pack, which delivers a range of 230 miles with all-wheel drive or 250 miles with rear-wheel drive.

Apart from the GT model, the Mach-E excels in terms of range, especially with its Extended Range battery pack. With rear-wheel drive, it can achieve up to 320 miles on a single charge, and with all-wheel drive, it offers a range of 300 miles. This performance surpasses that of the Ioniq 5 or EV6 when equipped with a larger battery. Additionally, all Mach-E models now have access to the Tesla Supercharger network, thanks to a free NACS adapter provided by Ford. This network is also integrated into the FordPass app, which helps users find charging stations and plan routes.

Variants of the Mach-E equipped with the Standard Range battery utilize a distinct battery chemistry and structure. The smaller pack contains 108 lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) cells, contrasting with the Extended Range version, which features 376 cells.

According to the car’s trip computer, I recorded an energy consumption of 2.8 miles per kilowatt-hour over a few hours of driving, which included freeway, fast-paced back roads, and city traffic. During this time, I had the climate control set for optimal comfort (temperatures in the 60s) and did not focus on driving efficiently. This suggests an actual range of approximately 250 miles.

Mach-E Delivers Impressive Performance on Twisty Roads

The 2024 Mach-E GT boasts 480 horsepower and 600 lb-ft of torque, capable of reaching 60 mph in just 3.8 seconds. For an additional $745 (or $995 if you don’t upgrade the wheels and tires), you can opt for the Performance Upgrade, which increases torque to 700 lb-ft and reduces the 0-60 mph time to 3.3 seconds. Given the price, it’s an enticing option.

Upon receiving the upgrade, the 2024 Mach-E benefits from a transition to a new, more robust rear motor. This motor shares its part number with the one used in the F-150 Lightning and is a component that Ford intends to further expand in their upcoming electric vehicles.

Currently, Ford is solely producing the rear motor on its own. However, for the Mach-E model, it will still rely on external suppliers for the inverter for the rear motor and for the front motors.

The Mach-E remains without a heat pump, but Ford has streamlined its cooling system from three circuits to two main ones, along with a climate control circuit. Ling Gong, a product development engineer and specialist in EV energy management, indicated that Ford adjusted the gear ratio to 9.7:1 from the former 9.0:1 to align better with the new motor’s features. Additionally, Ford replaced the wheels with aerodynamic ones, which collectively enhance the vehicle’s drag coefficient by approximately 0.007.

Updates to the 2024 Ford Mustang Mach-E

The propulsion noises seem to somewhat undermine the extensive efforts made by the development and engineering teams in refining the Mach-E and isolating it from wind, road noise, and gear whine. If you disable the additional sound, which is recommended, the Mustang Mach-E GT gives an impression that it could easily be mistaken for a European luxury vehicle.

The feeling of sophistication is partly achieved through the magnetic damping system, which is now standard in all GT models and allows for varying settings in Whisper, Engage, and Unbridle modes.

The Mach-E is equipped with an independent suspension system for all four wheels, featuring struts at the front and a multilink setup at the rear, both enhanced by a hollow stabilizer bar.

Every Mach-E model is equipped with disc brakes on all four wheels. The GT variant features bigger brake discs, and the levels of regenerative braking change depending on the driving mode. While there are no paddles on the steering wheel, the one-pedal driving mode enhances regenerative braking to such an extent that using the brake pedal might only be necessary in the final moments of stopping. However, the auto-hold feature in the Mach-E can be somewhat abrupt during parking maneuvers, so it’s advisable to deactivate it when you need to move forward slightly into a parking spot.

The Mach-E generally hides its substantial weight effectively, but rough and uneven back roads do highlight its hefty nearly 5,000-pound (4,952) GT version. The magnetic damping system seems to significantly enhance overall cabin comfort.

The Mach-E’s design and storage capacity remain the same, featuring ample rear seating and a sizable front trunk with a drain plug, perfect for tailgating. All GT models now come with Ford Performance front seats, which provide excellent support for both the back and thighs without being too restrictive. However, as with other Mach-E models, I found myself wishing the front seats could be lowered by an inch or two to improve comfort for taller drivers and enhance the vehicle’s handling dynamics.

The Mustang Mach-E GT model has a starting price of $55,890, which includes the destination fee. This model comes packed with a variety of standard features. It includes the Premium model’s 10-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system with a subwoofer, ambient lighting for the interior, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, memory settings, and a power-operated tailgate. Additionally, the GT model boasts an aluminum instrument panel and accent stitching.

Ford’s BlueCruise driver-assistance technology is priced at $2,100 for a three-year subscription. The latest version enhances lane positioning and allows for more seamless automatic lane changes, even across several lanes when necessary. Additional features on the vehicle I tested included a fixed panoramic glass roof and wheels painted in bronze, bringing the total cost to approximately $61,000.

2024 Ford Mustang Mach-E GT

Every variant of the Mustang Mach-E now includes an upgraded Ford Sync 4 infotainment system, featuring a vertically aligned 15.5-inch capacitive touchscreen that boasts an intuitive, nearly flat menu layout. Additionally, the vehicle is equipped with a customizable 10.2-inch digital instrument display, wireless phone charging capabilities, and USB ports located both at the front and rear.

Indeed, the Mach-E remains deeply connected to its sports car heritage. Whether you adore it or despise it, it undeniably offers a captivating character and proves to be a solid electric vehicle. The powerful performance, both inside and out, guarantees this.
