First Look: 2025 Lucid Gravity Revolutionizes the SUV Market
During a test drive of the prototype 2025 Lucid Gravity on the twisting cloverleaf ramps close to Lucid’s headquarters in the California Bay Area last week, there was a sense that something was not quite right.
I ended up going quicker than I had planned. Despite the uneven road surfaces, the Gravity seemed to offer much more, maintaining excellent composure and balance. It provided plenty of stability and conveyed a lot of feedback through the steering wheel, hinting at potential enjoyment—assuming, of course, this was on a private track.
The Gravity is classified as an SUV, yet in my experience spanning over 25 years of vehicle testing, I’ve never encountered an SUV with driving performance quite like this one. Lucid has remarkably tuned its handling to resemble that of a sports sedan—or perhaps more fittingly, a sport wagon. My senses were overwhelmed as I continuously checked the rearview mirror, noting the presence of two roomy, minivan-style rows behind me. This mix of features left me both amazed and slightly incredulous.
Let me tell you, in a positive sense! After my speed dating experience, I can confidently say it’s exceptionally great.

A New Perspective for SUVs
Reflecting on previous developments: If you haven’t paid much attention to Lucid’s impressive debut with the Air sedan, the introduction of the Gravity SUV highlights the company’s unwavering commitment to efficiency in a way that’s hard to miss.
The Air has already demonstrated its ability to deliver impressive performance with its small yet powerful and efficient all-electric propulsion system. Now, the Gravity model brings this cutting-edge technology to a format that is likely to be more appealing to many Americans: a three-row SUV. This particular version boasts an EPA-rated range of 450 miles, as claimed by Lucid, using a battery pack that is relatively moderate in size for its purpose—approximately 118 kWh. Additionally, it can gain 200 miles of range in just 15 minutes thanks to a 350-kW fast-charging connector, initially available with a CCS port and later transitioning to a Tesla-style NACS port.
The 2025 Lucid Gravity acknowledges the prevailing market trends and pressures but chooses to respond in a manner unique to Lucid. Therefore, it is expected that the Gravity isn’t designed to compete with the rugged, trail-inspired vehicles characterized by their boxy shapes and chunky tires.
„We’re not heading to Utah for rock climbing,“ stated Derek Jenkins, the chief design officer. „However, when it comes to reaching a cabin, navigating a dirt trail, or handling moderate off-road conditions, the Gravity will be superbly equipped for such adventures, thanks to its suspension capabilities.“

Before I set off on my drive, Eric Bach, Lucid’s chief engineer and senior vice president for product, emphasized that the company isn’t focused solely on achieving fast 0-60 mph times with its vehicles. He highlighted that performance could mean excelling on a racetrack, navigating a winding mountain road, enhancing crash safety, or improving NVH, which stands for noise, vibration, and harshness.
According to reports, the team at Lucid isn’t traditionally known for being SUV enthusiasts. However, with this new vehicle, they are set to shift many perspectives.
Efficiency is at the core of gravity’s design. Lucid prioritizes efficiency to prevent a chain reaction of challenges. Choosing components or a design that results in a less efficient vehicle leads to increased weight due to the need for more batteries to achieve the desired range. Consequently, passenger and cargo space becomes limited.
In a statement to Green Car Reports, the brand expressed its satisfaction with the Gravity’s design, emphasizing that it wasn’t made larger than necessary. The vehicle measures 198.2 inches in length and has a wheelbase of 119.5 inches. With an approximate height of 65 inches at its lowest configuration, it stands shorter than a Subaru Forester, ensuring that it can easily fit into parking garages.
Gravity’s streamlined design extends in every direction except for its width, which measures 78 inches without the mirrors and is typical for its category. In terms of frontal cross-sectional area, measured in CdA, it surpasses most competitors except for the Tesla Model X. The expected drag coefficient is approximately 0.24, though the final testing results are pending and may show a slightly improved figure.

According to Bach, this isn’t just the Air model with a new exterior. In a conversation with Green Car Reports, he explained that the Gravity was designed from the ground up as a brand-new SUV platform. This design incorporates a flexible array of components from the Air, reconfigured to suit the new structure. Bach highlighted that this approach allowed Lucid to create a vehicle truly capable of off-road adventures, while also being optimized for carrying passengers and luggage, with the appearance of an SUV.
In terms of design, Gravity complements the Air seamlessly. While it boasts a distinct shape, it features slightly deeper taillights and more upright headlights. This headlight design allows for a broader front trunk opening, which can include an optional net at the front.
The vehicle boasts an appealing design, featuring an elegant roof and a well-balanced posture. However, it doesn’t align perfectly with any existing SUV models. As my colleague Joel Feder observed during a test drive of a previous version of the Gravity alpha build prototype, this vehicle seems to blend characteristics of a wagon, minivan, and SUV, making it somewhat of a versatile hybrid.
I see your point. However, the Gravity handles unlike any minivan I’ve experienced before.

Handles like a Lucid rather than an SUV: Confirmed
A key objective during the tuning process was to ensure that the Gravity „performs more like a Lucid than a typical SUV,“ according to John Culliton, a specialist in chassis and dynamics, who accompanied me on the test drive.
To ensure this, the steering rack and basic design have been retained from the Air model, but the rear suspension setup, which includes the air suspension, is completely redesigned, along with the addition of rear-steer capability. The front subframe and steering mechanisms are fixed firmly in place to maximize feedback. However, compared to the Air, the key mounting points have been adjusted to improve load distribution. Although each link is newly designed, the configuration has been refined to decrease the stress on the steering system while still using the existing gear.
According to Bach, the Gravity’s body is primarily composed of aluminum, with steel making up only 2-4% at certain key areas. Lucid has utilized a megacasting technique for creating some of the body components.
In order to fully utilize the aerodynamic design and the efficient propulsion system, every Lucid Gravity model will be equipped with air suspension that can adjust the vehicle’s height and dampers that can be altered continuously. Drivers can choose from a variety of driving modes to set the dampers to different levels of stiffness, and they have the option to independently select from five distinct ride heights.

The multi-mode air suspension lacks an Auto setting, so users must manually discern the changes in comfort and handling. As Culliton highlights, choosing the Sprint performance mode lowers the Gravity to its minimal ride height. This mode also enhances the rear-wheel steering’s aggressiveness, stiffens the damping, and shifts the torque distribution more towards the rear.
These intelligent choices enable the vehicle to achieve acceleration from 0 to 60 mph in under 3.5 seconds. Additionally, it boasts a turning radius of 38 feet and offers a naturally comfortable seat height that facilitates easy entry and exit.
On an isolated road, Culliton wants to demonstrate the power of the dual-motor propulsion system, which delivers a total of 828 horsepower and 909 lb-ft of torque. He instructs me to perform a controlled launch by pressing down on the brake, flooring the accelerator, and then releasing the brake. The Gravity surges forward without the usual front-end lift common in other high-performance SUVs. It propelled forward with a strong thrust.

The Lucid Gravity has the characteristics of a subtle performer. Its steering is both engaging and responsive, offering a sense of control without being overly loud or aggressive. This gives it a similar driving experience to the Porsche Macan Electric, which we tested for our Best Car To Buy list. Although the Lucid Gravity is about a foot longer, it shares the rear-wheel steering feature with the Macan.
The Gravity I test-drove was equipped with the most substantial and performance-oriented wheel and tire setup available in its range. These were staggered width Pirelli PZero tires, measuring 22 inches at the front and 23 inches at the rear, which appeared to fully utilize the front wheels‘ gripping ability. This vehicle promises to deliver an exhilarating experience on a track, maintaining a sports-car-like balance on surfaces with good traction.
Additionally, the ride experience with this setup was impressive. Unlike some other high-end SUVs that glide smoothly, the Gravity offers a palpable connection to the road, but it never becomes too harsh.
Lucid has implemented a technique where the motor is gently attached to the vehicle’s body, enhancing the separation of the drive system from the body compared to the Air model. While the areas surrounding Lucid’s California headquarters didn’t present much difficulty for the Gravity, even accelerating beyond typical highway speeds revealed no issues. This reflects the extensive tuning of the body and chassis, as well as the possible benefits of the noise-reducing glass above.

Maximizing Space for Seven Passengers
The interior of the vehicle exudes a sense of openness and light, thanks in part to the generous glass roof. This glass serves dual purposes, providing both noise reduction and structural integrity. It seamlessly extends in two sections: the first stretches from the bottom of the windshield, arching over the front passengers, while the second section continues over the third row of seats. It stands out as the sole SUV with three rows that offers such an unobstructed view of the sky above.
As I approach the vehicle, the first thing that catches my attention is the noticeably low position of the passenger cabin floor, despite the vehicle’s underside not being particularly close to the ground. A source indicates that the air suspension provides a range of ride heights between approximately 135 and 235 millimeters (5.3 to 9.3 inches), which implies that at its lowest setting, it matches the ride height of an Air.
2025 Lucid Gravity Grand Touring Edition
Similar to the Air Grand Touring, the Gravity Grand Touring features 22 battery modules. However, four of these are positioned on a second level. In the Air model, this second layer is located beneath the rear seats. In contrast, the Gravity model shifts these modules to the space underneath the front seats. This adjustment enables a seamless cargo floor that extends over eight feet when the seats are folded down.
With the extra space provided by the front trunk, the Gravity offers a total of 120.6 cubic feet of cargo capacity when the second and third rows are folded down. According to Lucid, this is 40% more than what the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV offers and roughly 15% greater than the cargo space in the Rivian R1S, which also includes a front trunk.
Bach explained that achieving certain features requires a vehicle as large as a Chevy Suburban and its similar body-on-frame models, which contrasts with the ability to incorporate those attributes into the compact design of the Gravity space concept.
Lucid has not provided extensive details about the Gravity’s capabilities for off-road driving, but they have confirmed it will possess some. The vehicle’s Terrain mode will utilize the advanced stability system found in the high-performance Lucid Air Sapphire. This system is designed to monitor inputs from all four wheels at a frequency of 1,000 times per second, allowing it to manage the braking aspect of the traction control at this rate, although it cannot do so individually for each rear wheel. This feature ensures optimal regenerative braking, which is available in both standard and high modes when the driver releases the accelerator, thereby reserving the brake pedal for use with the brake pads specifically.

Sitting in the back seat of the Gravity: Tables replace screens
Standing at 6 feet 6 inches tall, I can comfortably sit behind two people of my own height in the Gravity.
The third-row floor remains level, and the seats swivel into a recessed area at the rear of the vehicle. According to Bach, the team made numerous decisions during the engineering phase to ensure that no space was sacrificed. For example, they opted to divide the active rear steering actuators into two parts instead of using a single unit, which would have reduced the legroom in the third row.
For an additional $2,900, buyers can choose to include a third row of seats, which contributes around 130 pounds to the vehicle’s total weight, though the exact overall weight remains unannounced. The designers of the Gravity envision it as an ideal vehicle for road trips, with the second row designed for activities like dining, gaming, and viewing content on electronic devices. Instead of installing a built-in entertainment system in the back, they decided to equip the area with a couple of durable utility tables.
The result that Gravity achieved resembles something you might find in a premium airline cabin.

Jenkins expressed pride in the achievement, noting that extensive discussions were held with a diverse group of people—ranging from customers to business professionals and families. The consensus was clear: there was a strong demand for a versatile table suitable for meals, laptops, and children’s iPads, complete with charging capabilities and easy storage. Jenkins emphasized that accomplishing this goal required significant effort, ensuring that the table was both sturdy and did not compromise the space in the second row.
The rear door, which opens to a full 90 degrees, simplifies the process of placing children into car seats. Engineers dedicated additional effort to ensure the door latches are robust. Moreover, the doors are equipped with a unique, low-positioned safety cinch that enhances side protection in case of an impact slightly above the lower edge.
Surprisingly, Lucid managed to position the H-point in the third row at a higher level compared to the Suburban, which enables a more comfortable leg position. This means passengers won’t have their view restricted to just their knees.
Jenkins highlighted that Lucid has put significant consideration into the durability and ease of cleaning of the materials it uses. The Gravity model comes in four distinct themes: Tahoe and Ojai feature leather materials, whereas Yosemite and Mojave utilize non-leather alternatives.

Gravity’s Interface: Design, Gestures, and Ambiance
Internally, the Gravity retains the core elements of Lucid’s interface but introduces several enhancements. The dashboard is now sleeker, featuring improved air vents for enhanced climate control, along with an expanded central console. At its core, the new technology provides an uninterrupted, full-width OLED screen offering superior contrast.
Perhaps most strikingly, the traditional steering wheel has been swapped out for a „squircle.“ During a brief test drive, it felt comfortable to hold my hands at the 9 and 3 positions, whether navigating sharp turns or cruising at high speeds.
The latest addition to the system is a feature called Vibes, designed to enhance mood and atmosphere. The developers have carefully evaluated the components of the augmented-reality head-up display to prevent it from becoming overcrowded. The touchscreen has been reconfigured to a horizontal orientation, introducing new thumb controls. These controls allow users to swipe to clear alerts and use a tactile switch with their thumb to choose menu options. In this updated design, menus consistently appear on the right side of the screen.
During my test drive, several parts of the interface were clearly still under development, as efforts were being made to address problems with the switchgear and delays in the menu system.

High Initial Cost, More Budget-Friendly Options Later
Lucid has announced that the Gravity Grand Touring will initially be priced at $96,550, which includes a $1,650 delivery fee. This model will come equipped with a larger battery pack and dual-motor all-wheel drive, with deliveries anticipated to begin towards the end of this year. Meanwhile, a more budget-friendly version, the $81,550 Touring model, is expected to be released in late 2025. This version will feature a smaller battery pack. According to company representatives, it’s reasonable to expect that the offerings will mirror those of the Air Touring model, which includes a smaller 84-kilowatt-hour battery. Calculations suggest that even with the smaller battery in the Gravity, the vehicle could still offer a range exceeding 300 miles.
The Gravity enters the realm of luxury with a host of available features. The Dynamic Handling Package includes a rear-wheel steering system, a triple-rate air suspension, and painted brake calipers. For an additional $2,500, the Comfort and Convenience package offers amenities like power-operated rear sunshades, doors with a soft-close function, a heated steering wheel, heated wipers, and heated seats in the second row. Lucid also provides two tiers of its DreamDrive, an assisted-driving and active-safety system, as optional extras, costing up to $6,750. Furthermore, a $750 towing package enhances its capability, allowing for a tow rating of up to 6,000 pounds.
Incorporate all the available features, such as the $2,900 Surreal Sound Pro audio system and the largest wheels measuring 22/23 inches, and the total price reaches $117,400 for a fully equipped Grand Touring model. This figure does not account for additional cosmetic enhancements.
2025 Lucid Gravity Grand Touring Model
During my initial experience with the vehicle, which was notably impressive, I only had a brief encounter with a finely tuned prototype under the watchful eyes of the company representatives. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to venture off-road, and I observed some peculiarities in the controls and touchscreen system. Hopefully, these issues will be resolved by Lucid before the first batch of vehicles is rolled out. Production of the Lucid Gravity commenced in Arizona last week.
There are countless factors that make this vehicle appealing, earning it a place among the top models of the year. Ultimately, if you’re in the market for an SUV but have a preference for the experience of driving a sports sedan, this vehicle is the perfect choice for you.
