Initial Impressions: The 2024 VW ID.4 Delivers the Debut We’ve Been Waiting For

Volkswagen corrects course, just barely beating the buzzer.

Before the eagerly awaited ID.Buzz electric van and the aerodynamic, journey-friendly VW ID.7 hatchback make their debut, Volkswagen has prepared the ground with an all-around family-friendly electric vehicle that meets expectations on almost all fronts.

The platform that the company established has been in place for several years. Long before the ID.4 became available in North America at the beginning of 2021, Volkswagen promoted this electric vehicle as one that everyday consumers could easily understand and readily view as a better option compared to popular models such as the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, or Subaru Forester.

To summarize my impressions, the 2024 VW ID.4 impresses with its performance and handling through its designed purpose. It boasts a roomy and intelligently designed cabin, efficient charging capabilities, and a dependable range that proves reliable in everyday use. This vehicle is an ideal match for individuals transitioning to electric vehicles initially.

Upon its initial release, the ID.4 appeared as though Volkswagen had overlooked the typical crossover user’s preference for uncomplicated systems. The vehicle’s design deviated significantly from conventional expectations. It utilized touch-sensitive controls beneath its display and incorporated additional touch-responsive buttons and areas on the steering wheel. This approach to the user interface seemed unfinished and could be likened to the products of a lesser-known tablet manufacturer.

The user experience of the ID.4 has been redesigned with electric vehicle drivers in mind. Volkswagen has overhauled the system, resulting in an interface that seems to be designed by individuals who regularly drive and charge an EV. All versions of the ID.4, except the base Standard model, now feature a new 12.9-inch display that boasts significantly enhanced processing capabilities. The climate controls remain conveniently fixed at the bottom of the screen, while a selection of quick-access icons is positioned at the top, enabling rapid navigation to essential features. Additional submenus are located on the left, expanding towards the right. The interface also borrows tabbed menus from Tesla, providing explanations for various functions, which enhances overall user understanding.

The latest device boasts rapid performance and instant response time, which is crucial when a driver needs to quickly touch a spot on the screen for icons or menus.

After a brief interaction with the interface, it becomes apparent that the system is user-friendly for beginners. The trip planning tool is integrated within its inherent navigation system, allowing for simple adjustments to include alternative charging stations on your journey. The platform informs users of the maximum DC fast-charging speed available once connected, eliminating any confusion about the charger’s capabilities. Additionally, initiating the battery preconditioning for rapid charging is straightforward, either manually with a virtual button or automatically, and users can conveniently view the benefits of this feature.

Indeed, it’s possible to connect your iPhone or Android phone without cords to Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, bypass the bulk of the menu, and enjoy the ID.4’s largely typical and easy-to-use controls. The vehicle includes turn-signal levers, door handles, conventional steering wheel manipulation, and adjustments for the mirrors, but you might still find the universal power-window switches, which operate both front and rear windows with a single button, a bit tricky to get used to.

Enhanced power and extended distance

The foundation of the ID.4’s performance has consistently matched its purpose with a unique balance of smooth ride, precise control, and plush comfort that sets it apart from many competitors. For the 2024 update, VW has maintained these excellent qualities while boosting the vehicle with faster pickup, thanks to a newly developed in-house rear motor labeled the AP550. This motor will also feature in the forthcoming ID.7.

The power output sees a significant increase in the rear-wheel-drive models equipped with the 82-kwh battery pack (77 kwh of which is usable), jumping to 282 horsepower and 402 pound-feet of torque, up from the earlier 201 horsepower and 229 pound-feet. The all-wheel-drive models with dual motors also experience a boost, climbing to 335 horsepower from the former 295 horsepower. The front motor in the all-wheel-drive models, which is an induction type rated at 107 horsepower and 119 pound-feet of torque, remains unchanged.

Installing the latest rear motor unit enhances both power output and fuel economy, allowing all-wheel-drive models to accelerate to 60 mph in just under five seconds. Additionally, the all-wheel-drive variant sees a modest increase in EPA estimates, rising to 263 miles from the former 255 miles, while the single-motor rear-wheel-drive model now reaches 291 miles, up from 275 miles previously.

Initial signs suggest that the performance continues to be impressive. During a spirited 69-mile drive through the streets and highways of Los Angeles, followed by a stretch on the Angeles Crest Highway and returning, my driving companion and I managed to achieve an average of 3.0 miles per kilowatt-hour in a Pro S AWD version with two motors. In a more relaxed, flat journey through the city boulevards in the single-motor, rear-wheel-drive Pro S variant, I recorded an average consumption of 3.5 miles per kilowatt-hour, with the external temperature lingering in the 60-degree range.

Here’s a heads up: The entry-level ID.4 Standard, priced at $41,160, comes with a 62-kwh battery (58 kwh of which is usable) and is exclusively available with rear-wheel drive. It retains the previous version’s 201-hp rear motor and the older 12.0-inch display. We’ll provide a more detailed look at this variant soon, but currently, it’s the exception in the series.

Base models have a maximum charging rate of 140 kW, compared to the 175 kW charging capability of other variants. However, irrespective of the model, recharging from 10% to 80% battery level is expected to be completed in roughly half an hour.

Exceptional driving experience, control, and relaxation

When cruising on city streets, highways, and daily travel paths, the ID.4 stands out, offering an experience akin to that of a luxury vehicle, focusing on delivering a smooth ride, a peaceful interior, and an ability to effortlessly absorb bumps. Initially, one might assume the ID.4 isn’t cut out for high-speed turns or navigating through winding roads until, like us, you experience its capabilities when pushed to the limit in Sport mode, which slightly enhances its acceleration and steering reactivity.

Upon reaching the picturesque yet demanding Angeles Crest Highway in California, initial judgments were quickly dismissed, replaced by a deep appreciation for Volkswagen’s chassis engineering expertise. The ID.4’s ability to deliver such a refined balance of comfort and control in its ride, especially with the low-profile 20-inch wheels on my Pro S test model and without relying on air suspension or adaptive damping systems, is quite remarkable. The all-wheel-drive versions maintain an almost perfect weight distribution, and with a slight increase in power directed to the rear wheels, there’s an enjoyable capability to nudge the back end around the sharpest bends with a bit of spirited driving.

The Volkswagen ID.4 features a regenerative braking system that may be perceived as refreshingly straightforward by some, but potentially lacking in versatility by others. Unlike the Hyundai Ioniq 5, which offers multi-level regenerative braking with paddle-shifters, the ID.4 simplifies the process with just two settings – ‚D‘ and ‚B‘ – on the modified shift stalk that no longer protrudes from the instrument panel. The ‚D‘ setting provides minimal regenerative braking, allowing the vehicle to coast extensively, even more so than many traditional fuel-powered cars. The ‚B‘ setting increases regenerative braking to its peak at 0.13g, which is relatively modest in comparison to other electric vehicles and does not include a specific „one-pedal“ driving mode. Nonetheless, the system does recuperate a significant amount of energy when the brake pedal is engaged.

The ID.4 excels in roominess and comfort

When it comes to the ID.4’s seating, it doesn’t disappoint. Unlike some electric vehicles that compromise on seat depth to accommodate larger batteries, the ID.4 offers seats that can be lowered to a comfortable level, providing hip stability and lower back support. Additionally, the ample room in the back seat easily accommodates a tall adult or the installation of a child seat, thanks to the ID.4’s broad door openings and ample cushioning, making it a top choice.

Returning to the control panel, the ID.4 boasts the outstanding ID.Light, a pulsating light strip situated at the junction of the dashboard and the bottom of the windshield. This feature uses hues, directional signals, and intensity to nudge you about your upcoming maneuver or to warn you of safety notifications. It’s the kind of innovation that, after a few days of use, leaves you puzzled about how you managed before its introduction.

The ID.4 has room for improvement. The numerous controls and the extensive options in the system can make the ID.4 seem unnecessarily complicated. This is somewhat due to the overabundance of submenu screens. However, it’s important to note that these are just first impressions from spending a few hours with the vehicle. With a bit more time, perhaps a few days to familiarize myself with the primary set of icons and their functions, my perspective might change.

2024 Model of Volkswagen ID.4

The VW ID.4 continues to be a reasonably priced option, although costs have slightly increased. The mid-range Pro S versions, which we tested, hit the sweet spot in the range, assuming you’re okay with forgoing features like heated seats in the back and a separate climate control for the rear area. With a starting price of $51,420 for the rear-wheel-drive model and $55,300 for the all-wheel-drive variant (not including the additional $395 for the Aurora Red Metallic color of our test vehicle), the package includes 20-inch alloy wheels, an automatic rear hatch, artificial leather upholstery, enhanced interior lighting, and the eye-catching illuminated VW emblems on the front and back that effectively turn the car into a mobile billboard.

Possibly, I could manage without the latter, yet the inclusion of a non-opening panoramic sunroof in the Pro S model and higher, along with the brighter and varied interior color options available in the ID.4, certainly present a welcome change from the monotonous, all-gray Golf that could have been your ride in the past.

Upcoming 2024 Model of the Volkswagen

The ID.4 offers an appealing bundle that’s sure to captivate the typical crossover-owning households. Apart from providing the entry-level battery models with comparable valuable enhancements, our sincere wish is for VW to leave it unchanged for a little while now that they’ve mastered the art of attraction.
